Ico & the Bird Fine Jewelry was founded in 2018 in a small workshop in Jaipur, India, by designer, Juliana D. Carr. A self-described “rockhound,” Juliana was transformed by her first trip to the ‘city of gems, and her opportunity to work with the unrivaled craft of Jaipur’s jewelry artisans.
“Jaipur changed me most astonishingly. I worked as a professional actress for most of my life and was at the point where that career felt incredibly unfulfilling. Gemstones have always been a passion of mine, but it was not until that trip to India that I realized it was possible to marry my passions for both stones and telling stories.
My background has always been artistic, beginning as a ballerina dancing at the School of American Ballet and the Washington Ballet. I earned my undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Other studies include a Graduate Gemology (GG) degree from the Gemological Institute of America and graduate fine arts at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).
As a classically trained pianist who has been playing since I was five, the magic that we can create through our hands has guided me throughout this journey. Working with artisans from around the world who use their hands to create jewelry that reflects both their artistry as well as their love for their craft, has been a great honor for me.”
