Morganite was first discovered in Madagascar in 1911 and was initially called “Pink Beryl.” Because it comes from the beryl family of minerals, which also include well-known gems, emerald and aquamarine, it is sometimes called ‘Pink Emerald. Morganite colors range from a peach orange to salmon pink to a pure pink. The color is nearly always a soft pastel hue. This gem has limited availability and is considered rare.

Morganite was named to honor the American financier, J.P. Morgan, for his financial support for the arts and sciences, and his important gifts of gems to the American Museum of Natural History in New York and to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Morgan was one of the most important gem collectors in the early 1900s.
