Moonstone exhibits the optical phenomenon known as ‘Adularescence,’ which causes the extraordinary glow on its surface. Ancient cultures coveted the stone, believing it was created from moon beams. They also held that the Roman goddess Diana, goddess of the moon, could be seen within the stone, and that it would bestow love, wisdom, and good fortune upon those who possessed it.

In India, Moonstone is considered a sacred stone. It is believed that, since the beginning of time, a moonstone had been set into the forehead of India’s moon god, Chandra.

Because of its powers as a love stone, it is a traditional wedding gift and is thought to be instrumental in reconciling estranged lovers. There was a belief in India and in Europe that two people wearing moonstone on the full moon would fall passionately in love.  It is known to give gifts of prophecy and clairvoyance to the wearer.
